Summary: Sam is the only child of the great hunter John Winchester, but life under his father's thumb is miserable for him. When a scholarship gives him the chance to escape to college, he seizes the opportunity to leave the grim world of hunting behind for the promise of a normal life. But when the same unknown creature that killed his mother year’s earlier murders his fiancée, Sam, embittered and heartsick, returns to his father’s side. John seems strangely reluctant to have him there though, and soon Sam is hunting on his own. While stalking vampires in the central states, he is forced to strike a deal with one to save the lives of hostages. Now, torn between a hunting community that’s shut him out and a vampire that enjoys inflicting pain, his father missing and innocent lives over his head, Sam finds that simple survival might be more than he can manage, and there are even darker things looming on the horizon…

Author's Notes

I think innana-maat's art pretty much speaks for itself. I am completely blown away by her talent, dedication, and the sheer volume of work she produced to help me illustrate this story. I used as much of it as I could, but everyone should check out her art post to see all of the lovely things I couldn't wiggle in.

Aurora did an absolutely fantastic album cover and mix for the story! Make sure you stop in and take a look at the result of her efforts.

In addition, I'd like to thank the usual suspects for their invaluable assistance with this fic! Anything still wrong with it is entirely my fault (naturally) and if it's technical -- most likely a result of last minute fiddling.

vodou-blue - grammar cop and cheerleader extrordinaire,  elusive_life_77 - who always listens patiently to what I have to rant about, pats my head, and understands why sometimes you just have to Molotov yourself, dime_for_12  - who is fighting back the evil forces of advanced academia and still managed to squeeze the story in, and  wickedlilwitch -  who has yet to tell me drop dead when I send her sad little plaintive IM's in the dead of the night (that's what you get for answering beta requests and actually doing it. Three fics later I'm still scratching at her door).

Yay! Excited to look from the inside and to see how Dean really feels about everything. There are some things left unexplained in this fic. For example, why Dean started seeing Sam less often, and after their confrontation he went back to their normal schedule. I get that sometimes the readers need to fill in the blanks for themselves and I like that. My theory is that Dean started to angst a bit and he didn't like it. XD

It's hard to pinpoint where and what you did right handling pain. I just really like your style. The (physical and emotional) pain that comes from anticipation and imagination is mostly just hinted in your fic, not quite graphical, and I like that. But they are deep and tug at my heartstring each time. For example, when Dean and Sam first made their contract, Dean said that it would hurt. That's a good anticipation. And when Sam was tortured you didn't describe it in details, I like that. When Sam met with Dean afterward, he asked for sex because Dean told him it would lessen the pain, that's just heartbreaking. I once heard that in order for the reader to feel sorry for a character, all you need to do is for that character to not feel sorry for himself. And you handle that pretty well, too. Both Dean and Sam are strong characters and don't really dwell on their own misery, but rather take action. - What you are doing with this story is really working for me that's what I'm saying. :)
