Summary: Lilith's plans are in shambles and the door to Lucifer's cage has been well and truly lost, but Dean is still a demon and Sam is still bound to him with a stolen curse of sex and blood. All things considered, though, Sam's life could be worse and he is making peace not just with Dean, but with his own growing psychic gifts and the barrage of seemingly meaningless visions they inflict on him. But strange winds are starting to blow and after a series of disasters strike, Sam discovers that the greatest danger may be in the secrets that still lie between him and Dean. If Sam can't fix things before time runs out it won't be the Apocalypse, but it will still be the end of the world.

This story is a direct sequel to Fortress, and was submitted for the 2011 SPN J2 Big Bang challenge.

Author's Notes

I owe my undying gratitude and effusive thanks to the following people --vodou_blue for her extrordinary (and, as always, last minute on my part) grammar work, elusive-life-77 for beta reading and her unflagging enthusiasm and zombie slayage, and canter76, alchemynerd, caz2y5, roshni06, and heard-the-owl, all of whom offered so much of their time and advice and support to get this story done and posted on time.

And of course my awesome artist ely-wa!

Hey there! I am LOVING the Fortress 'Verse. So many of the ideas you explore here are so original and so clever. I've never once come across the idea of moving the entrance to the cage (neato!), and your bilateral nature of Heaven and Hell, mirror-imaged but -- like the opposing poles of a magnet -- naturally repulsive is such an elegant and intriguing concept.

All of that is fascinating, but the real meat of the story lies in your beautifully realized Sam and Dean. Dean especially is so mysterious and yet right. That Dean is an agent of chaos has always been clear; that you take this so much further and into such unexplored territory is marvelous. I can't wait to learn more about just what kind of beast Dean is now. Not an Entropic Angel, but not quite a demon as we understand it either.

I do have a request, if that's okay. The PDF to this third installment was hosted on the seized-by-the-Feds Megaupload. Is there any chance you could email the PDF for Static to me ( timian3.14@me.com ) or maybe upload it to some still working site? I'd be most grateful.

Thank you!

I'm so glad you are enjoying the story! I like playing with canon "what ifs" and it always great to hear that other people are finding the possibilities interesting. I especially appreciate your comments regarding the characterization! That's always a difficult part *wryly* taking established characters, messing things up, and trying to maintain them as recognizable to the source material. I don't really have anything to do with the PDF files, so I just emailed it to you. I tinker with the LJ as I notice errors, so the PDF might have problems I have otherwise corrected -- but the story will be the same. *hopes this is the PDF with the upgraded ending, winces* I hope you enjoy Static as much as you liked Fortress! Let me know what you think <3
