Lovely moment of closure on John's part of the story. It was never going to end any way but tragically for him, and for as lost as he was as a person, he had also lost much. It was very perceptive of Dean to at least give him the choice of how he wanted to end things. Kind, too, even though he really did it for Sam.
Also love how your writing style conveys such a sense of Other to Dean without having to oversell it with wordiness.
