To do your damn research and track the monsters by the wreckage they leave in the world. You know, I feel like a fool for not having considered it before, but you're right. Tracking monsters by obits really cuts down the chances of hunting something that isn't a threat to humans.
I am really loving this atory. Dean's grief and loneliness, and the way that the wolf gradually moved into his life when Dean had nothing left, seems completely in-character to me.
